1. Functional Purpose
Designing road crossing structures (such as box and pipe culverts) requires integrating horizontal coordinates, vertical profiles, and drainage invert schedules. The **Structure Plan & Profile Generator** processes horizontal coordinate alignments, vertical PVI profiles, and hydrology schedules to calculate skew coordinates and depths of cover.
It checks for shallow cover warnings and generates SVG longitudinal sectional drawings to verify vertical clearances.
2. Practical Workflow Instructions
To compile plan-profile coordinate tables and cross-section drawings:
- Upload Geometric Data: Upload the Horizontal Alignment CSV, Vertical Profile CSV, and Hydrology Crossings CSV.
- Map Column Headers: Ensure headers map correctly (Station, Easting, Northing for horizontal; Station, Elevation for profile; Station, Invert Levels, Culvert Type for crossing data).
- Set Slab & Precision Parameters: Input the project name, top-slab thickness (m, e.g. 0.30m), and coordinate decimal precision.
- Compile and Export: Click `Compile Plan & Profile Data`. Inspect the generated SVG sectional drawings and export the coordinate listing to Excel.
3. Mathematical & Civil Engineering Basis
The tool interpolates elevations at crossing stations. For a crossing station S_cross located between profile stations S1 and S2:
The **Depth of Cover (C)** is the clearance between the road surface and the top slab of the culvert:
Where Z_avg_invert is the average invert level, H_inner is the inner height of the culvert barrel, and t_slab is the top-slab thickness.
The tool checks this cover against the AASHTO minimum of **0.30m** under pavements. Cover depths below this threshold are flagged to warn of potential structural issues under live loads.
