1. Functional Purpose

Compiling a Bill of Quantities (BoQ) for highway projects is a tedious task. Designers must map physical quantities (such as volume of sub-base, area of subgrade preparation, or linear meters of curbs) to specific technical specification clauses (like the ERA Standard Technical Specifications 2013 or AACRA Urban Specifications). The **BoQ Tool** automates this by importing quantity lists, auto-matching description terms to specification divisions, and generating structured, hierarchical tender schedules.

This ensures that pay item numbers, unit descriptors, and descriptions match the standards of client agencies, preventing billing discrepancies and cost estimation errors.

2. Practical Workflow Instructions

To compile a hierarchical Bill of Quantities:

  1. Import Quantities: Upload your takeoff Excel report or CSV file containing item names and quantities.
  2. Map Pay Items: Select your target specification standard (e.g., ERA 2013). The mapping engine matches item names (like "subgrade prep" or "concrete class A") to their corresponding specification clauses (e.g. 2100 or 5200).
  3. Structure Hierarchies: Organize items into standard divisions (Series 1000 General to Series 9000 Ancillary).
  4. Generate Tender Schedule: Export the structured BoQ table. The output includes summary sheets, pay item code divisions, unit descriptions, and standard pricing columns, ready for client submittal.

3. Mathematical & Civil Engineering Basis

The tool maps quantity descriptors to standard specification classes using string-similarity distance algorithms. The mapping function matches descriptions with standard pay item categories using distance metrics.

Once mapped, the total cost for each subdivision and division is compiled:

Cost = Sum(Q * P)

Where Q is the quantity, and P is the unit price. The tool ensures all pay items match standard units (e.g. $m^2, m^3, t, km$), helping prevent bid errors.
